MEDICAL DIRECTORS

Dr. Irina Kogan
Board Certified Family Medicine Physician

In addition to being the Medical Director at Briarwood Healthcare, she is the Medical Director of the Beth Israel Deaconess Needham Heights Family Medicine practice in Needham. Dr. Kogan has been practicing in western Massachusetts for the past seven years. Having spent the first four years of her practice in Massachusetts primarily in the geriatric field, she has extensive experience in geriatric management.

Dr. Kogan was born in Russia and received her medical degree from Rostov Medical Institute in 1988. She did her residency and specialized in neurology but after moving to Canada in 1994, she decided to pursue a professional career in primary care. She finished her residency at the University of Toronto (Mount Sinai Hospital and North York General Hospital) in 1999 and moved to Massachusetts in 2000.

Her current practice is affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham. She works closely with specialists from those hospitals. Dr. Kogan strongly believes in providing high standard quality geriatric care.


Dr. Sumer Verma
Alzheimer’s Program Medical Director

Dr. Verma is presently the Director of Geriatric Psychiatry Education and Fellowship Program at McLean Hospital in Belmont, MA. He has also held the position of the Psychiatrist in Charge of the Special Care Geriatric Unit at McLean Hospital between 1994 and 2002. His specialty and certification is in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and he has added qualification in Geriatric Psychiatry. In 1987, Dr. Verma received the Roeske Certificate of Excellence from the American Psychiatric Association. In 2000, he was awarded by “Psychiatric Times,” as “Teacher of the Year.” Between the years 1971 and the present, Dr. Verma has made over 1000 presentations nationally and abroad in a variety of settings and to different audiences involved in the care of the aging population. He served as Principal Investigator on a variety of clinical and research trials, and has been on a number of national and state committees and editorial boards. Dr. Verma is a co-author and co-editor for the book, Depression in Later Life, published by Marcel Dekker in 2003.
